KARACHI: The public and private hospitals of Karachi have
been facing acute shortage of oxygen cylinders after the rising use of oxygen
to treat coronavirus and other disease patients in the megalopolis, sources at
hospitals told PPI on Sunday.
They said the oxygen cylinders had disappeared from
Karachi markets which had increased miseries to the patients suffering from
COVID-19 and other related complications. The corona positive patients need
oxygen to maintain their blood oxygen, but, the majority of government and
private hospitals have been facing an acute shortage of oxygen cylinders since
The oxygen cylinders either aren’t available at all or
being sold at exorbitant rates in some local markets. The COVID-19 infected
patients admitted to High Dependency Units of the city hospitals or isolated at
their home need oxygen to maintain patient blood oxygen.
The federal and Sindh governments have miserably failed
to import cylinders to save lives as well as maintain the prices of oxygen
cylinders. The dealers and hoarders have stopped supply of oxygen cylinders to
hospitals and refuse to continue the supply of cylinders at old rates.
It may be noted that patients suffering from COVID-19
coronavirus suffer from breathing issues, and they need to be put on
supplementary oxygen supply to assist their lungs which are usually severely
affected by the novel virus.
